description: Carson McCullers was an author/playwright from Columbus, Georgia. Her first novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, was written when she was 22. McCullers struggled with her sexual identity and relationships with women. She suffered from rheumatic heart desease which resulted in a series of strokes when she was in her early 30's. She also wrote Member of the Wedding, which was on Broadway during the 1950's, and Reflections in a Golden Eye, which was adapted into a film directed by John Houston starring Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando. She spent the last 23 years of her life in Nyack, NY.
